Dividing Decimals
In this lesson, we will learn how to divide decimals. Dividing decimals is similar to dividing whole numbers, but we need to pay attention to the placement of the decimal point in the quotient.
Steps to Divide Decimals:
- Eliminate the Decimal: If the divisor (the number you are dividing by) is a decimal, move the decimal point to the right until it becomes a whole number. Remember to do the same with the dividend (the number being divided).
- Divide as Usual: Perform the division as you would with whole numbers.
- Place the Decimal: In the quotient, place the decimal point directly above where it would be in the dividend.
Example:
Let's divide 3.75 by 0.5.
-
Eliminate the Decimal:
- Move the decimal in 0.5 one place to the right, making it 5.
- Move the decimal in 3.75 one place to the right, making it 37.5.
-
Divide as Usual:
537.5=7.5
-
Place the Decimal: The answer is 7.5.
So, 3.75 div 0.5 = 7.5.
Key Questions:
- What do you do if the divisor is a decimal?
- How do you determine the placement of the decimal in the quotient?
